"The Votes Are In! Buffy: Fool For Love & Angel: Darla"
  12/01/2000

This two hour Buffy & Angel event left me with the following count: Spike, Buffy, Buffy, Spike, Buffy, Spike... the votes are in for the two most likely to be together in the not-too-distant future. Do we demand a recount? A revote? Some Angel fans may take this to court, but I wouldn't bet on a verdict, Angel. Not that Angel would mind since he has his fangs full with Darla at the moment (oops, hope that's not more psychic smoke signals I'm feeling. Don't know about a re-vamped Darla roaming the world again. I kinda
like her human and angry about it).

My Halloween prediction of a Buffy & Spike romance seem to be in the cards as we are starting to see ambiguous white hat revelations about Spike (i.e. 'He wasn't called William the Bloody because of murderous psychopathic ways, but due to his bloody awful sentimental poetry'). Kudos to James Masters for an incredible performance. He out Giled Giles as a sad and thoughtful poet. Seeing who Spike was as a human, a sensitive one at that, is sure to stir up everyone's sympathy and have them rooting for what I believe is inevitable: a dangerous exciting romance between Buffy and Spike.

I loved the whole dialogue between two about how Spike killed two previous Slayers. They eventually became tired of the fight and too intrigued by the eternal peace they could find in death. Finally, Spike validated a reality underlying this world created by Joss Whedon: there is only one Slayer and thousands of vampires. Eventually the odds can catch up to you, and all a vamp needs is "one good day. Bye, Bye Slayer. The poignant tenuousness of a Slayer's life is laid out in "Fool for Love."

What keeps Buffy grounded and "living" is her family and friends. However, that could shift under her feet this season with a mother who is mysteriously ill, a boyfriend who it's been hinted is not long for this world, and a supernatural sister who's not really her sister at all and is being hunted by the ultimate demonic force. How Buffy will face this is the cornerstone of this season.

I also loved seeing the whole Angel, Darla, Spike and Drusilla back story. I loved how Drusilla, despite her madness, can see Spike's sensitive side. It is finally confirmed: she sired him into the vamp life.

Seeing Darla sired by the Master was great. Why wasn't I surprised that she was a wealthy prostitute as a human or that "she" may have been the one responsible for the disappearance of a whole Virginia colony after she was vamped? Also, watching Angel come for her at the Master's lair was priceless as he sexily begged her to live "above ground" with him.

Re: Tara Predictions(Buffy: "Family"): I came pretty close on this one. No, daddy wasn't a vampire, but a bigoted sexist who sought to "keep the ladies in line" as Spike put it. This was a fully charming episode as we got to learn more about that mysterious girl who messed up the spell last year.

Stay tuned!
