I know you've all heard the famous expression: "If wishes were horses,
beggars would ride." Now that the champagne corks have all been popped, I
thought I'd play the role of the beggar as we usher in a new millennium. I
thought I'd start off the New Year with my list of wishes for the coming year
in sci-fi/fantasy t.v.
Voyager/Next Generation cross over movie: I would love to see the next movie
in the Trek franchise feature both the crew from Voyager and the Next Generation. Picard meets Janeway (hot! & maybe a possible romance?). Riker
meets Torres. Data meets Seven of Nine. I could go on and on but I'll work
myself into such a frenzy that I may need to go out for a run.
The plot line could be interesting: Perhaps the omnipotent Q throws the
Enterprise into the Delta Quadrant to do God knows what with the Voyager
crew. Or maybe Voyager is thrown back into the Alpha Quadrant temporarily in
a reprieve from Q to do God knows what with the Next Generation crew. Whatever the plot, it would certainly be interesting to watch these
characters interact.
Starfleet Academy: First Assignment series: Voyager will be entering its
vaunted Seventh Season in 2000. Sadly, this means the series will probably
end, since the Trek creators have been limiting their shows to a seven
season run.
If a new Trek show is developed, I feel it should be a Starfleet Academy
series. We have seen several hints through the years of how interesting this
could be. A new ship with a young crew on their first assignments could
provide some fresh story lines. A new ship and young crew could also be
justified by the fact that so much of Starfleet had been destroyed during
previous encounters with the Borg. It would also allow the show's creators to
walk a fine line between having the perfect Starfleet officers of Next
Generation and the very human characters of Deep Space Nine.
X-Files Marriage: Maybe I'm just a sucker for romance, but I would love to
see Mulder and Scully tie the knot before the show goes off the air. I know
it keeps the show intriguing to restrain the romantic subext, but since this
is the last season, I say go for the full wedding with alien bridesmaids and
all!
Xena Gets Back Her Sidekick: Can you imagine Batman without Robin? Clark
Kent without Lois? Kirk without Spock? Unfortunately, the current season
of Xena barely shows Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle on screen at the same
time or, when they are, interacting in any meaningful way since the season
premiere. These girls barely seem to know each other this season. I'm
hoping this is only a temporary situation which resulted from Lucy Lawless'
(Xena) pregnancy, but I fear this separation may continue long after the
baby is due. The show's producers say they are worried about alienating
their young fans by implying any romantic subtext (which was very mild to
begin with -totally over the kiddies heads), yet they are willing to show
Xena having full sexual intercourse and being brutally thrown from a horse
after her male partner is ….errrr finished.
No Cleopatra 2525 Spice Girls: I had high hopes for this new show from
Renaissance Pictures which is set to replace Hercules mid-January. I have
not seen the show that features three highly acclaimed actresses who have
appeared in Hercules and Xena. The three women are to fight to reclaim the
earth's surface after some evil robots have taken over and have pushed
humanity underground. However, I was disturbed by some of the publicity
shots which feature costumes that look like they are the sexed up sisters of
the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Ren Pictures claim to fame is their very
smart and sophisticated take on the fantasy genre. I'm praying that
Cleopatra 2525 will be as interesting to the adults as the kids.
Babylon 5 Space Opera T.V. Movie Event: I often thought the themes of
Babylon 5 would make an excellent space opera with singing and dancing. I
would love to see the creators of Bablyon 5 take on an epic battle story, but
with the twist of having full musical orchestration and each of the lead
characters signing their lines. A space opera done as a space opera. Hee
Haw!!
